Job Description:
The Senior Tax Operations Analyst serves as a subject matter expert in tax information reporting and withholding remittance for life insurance and annuity products. This position requires in-depth knowledge of IRS reporting forms—including 1099, 5498, 1042-S, 1042 and 945—and a demonstrated ability to ensure accurate and timely compliance with federal and state regulations. Operating with limited supervision, the Sr. Analyst is responsible for leading the execution and oversight of operational tax functions, collaborating across business units, and influencing strategic projects involving data integrations, systems enhancement, and regulatory change. This individual plays a key role in elevating tax operations through technical expertise, process innovation, cross-functional collaboration, and mentorship.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the coordination, oversight, and execution of federal and state information reporting and withholding remittance in accordance with rules and regulations
- Act as a subject matter expert across the enterprise—providing guidance, mentorship, and training to colleagues and internal stakeholders, providing work direction and resolution to complex inquiries, and ensuring high quality standards are achieved overall
- Support and review reconciliation activities of tax-related accounts housed in the company’s general ledger
- Strong collaboration and partnership with information technology teams on data integration to tax software; representing operational tax needs/requirements, troubleshooting and resolving issues
- Analyze tax reporting data to identify trends, operational efficiencies and enhancements of process as well as controls
- Actively work to improve the quality and accuracy of information reporting by thinking critically to create better understanding and efficiencies within operations
- Provide technical expertise and collaboration on legislative assignments and new product rollout initiatives as required to meet operational tax needs
- Develop, write, and maintain various standard operating procedures (SOPs) and correspondence that are both internal and external facing to ensure clarity, consistency, and efficiency in workflows and top tier client/advisor experiences
- Contribute to an environment of continuous improvement and foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and client-centricity
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of IRS tax reporting regulations related to life insurance and annuity products, including Forms 1099, 5498, 1042-S, 1042, and 945
- Excellent organizational skills and balancing of multiple tasks
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, in particular Word and Excel (pivot tables, formulas, and reporting tools)
- Proven ability to analyze and interpret complex tax data and drive actionable insights
- High attention to detail with strong documentation and audit-readiness mindset
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple deadlines and ensure accuracy
- Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and the ability to influence without direct authority
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, particularly Finance, IM&T, Actuarial, and Operations
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information clearly to non-technical audiences
Education
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
Experience
- 5-7 years of work experience in life insurance and/or annuity industry
- Experience leading cross-functional projects, process improvements, or training/mentoring initiatives
Salary range: $85,000 - $100,000
